Him with all our “heart … soul … mind … and … strength” (Mark 12:30). Without this focus, we lose touch with God’s presence; we are outside the shelter of the Most High. The Lord brought Elijah to “Horeb, the mountain of God.” In Hebrew, Horeb means “desolation.”* The barren environment mirrored Elijah’s soul. Yet to God, Horeb was actually a place where the issues of a man’s heart were flushed to the surface. There is no theater at Horeb, no acting.
